Cars with vinyl tops were extremely popular in the 1970s among car buyers in the United States. Vinyl tops were originally developed to give cars a fixed roof to resemble the appearance of a convertible car. In the late 70s, vinyl top cars also popular on European and Japanese markets. However, vinyl tops were most seen in the luxury segments of their standard sedan cars. Automakers continued installing vinyl tops on their cars throughout the 1980s, but demand for vinyl top cars began to fall in the 1990s.

Nowadays, vinyl tops are mostly available in hearses and limousines for mostly practical reasons. The vinyl tops conceal the welded body seams in hearses and limousines which becomes noticeable when standard-sized sedans are elongated. Furthermore, we are also seeing car enthusiasts are installing vinyl tops on their customized cars and vintage cars.

There are four types of vinyl tops available in cars that are made during the 1960s and 1970s.

1. Full Vinyl Tops – Full vinyl tops are the most common. In full vinyl top cars, the vinyl covers the entire roof of the car, including the C pillars. Depending on the model and make of the car, the pillars supporting the windshields may or may not be covered. Mostly, the four-door model has the full vinyl top. Full vinyl tops cars include 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III, 1970 Opel Commodore A, and 1972 Opel Diplomat B.
2. Halo Vinyl Tops – IN this vinyl top design, the vinyl covers only the tops of the windshield and the side windows of the car. Halo vinyl tops include Ford LTD.
3. Canopy Vinyl Tops – In this category of vinyl tops, the vinyl covers two-thirds or the front half of the car’s roof. The vinyl covering ends at the edge of the rear side windows. Examples of canopy vinyl tops cars include 1973 Plymouth Duster and 1964 Chrysler 300K.
4. Landau Vinyl Tops – In this category of vinyl tops, the vinyl covers a quarter or third of the roof from the rear including the C pillars. The vinyl top extends to edge of the front or rear side windows. Cars with landau vinyl tops cars include Lincoln Continental Town Coupé, Chrysler New Yorker, and Chrysler Fifth Avenue.

Most people don’t know but you may damage your convertible or vinyl top car if using a drive-through car wash. Drive through car wash can damage your convertible or vinyl top car, particularly if it comes with a plastic window in the rear. You may not notice this at first, but after a few cash washes, you will notice stretches the top’s fabric. You will also see scratches, yellows, and delamination of the plastic windows.
